Application of Chlorine Dioxide for Treatment of Contaminated Drinking Water

Abstract
Since the side reactions of the conventional disinfectants used in water treatment, the use of chlorine dioxide is suggested as better alternative disinfectant and oxidant. Chlorine dioxide generated from the acid-sodium chlorite system was used in this study. The mixture of chlorine dioxide, chlorite and chlorate are determined sequentially using the iodometric technique. Also, the spectrophotometrlc analysis of chlorine dioxide, chlorite were conducted obtaining absorption spectra of chlorine dioxide and chlorite. The molar extinction coefficient of chlorine dioxide and chlorite are 1210 M^(-1) cm^(-1) and 130^(-1) M^(-1) cm^(-1), respectively. The oxidation of phenol by chlorine dioxide has been studied. Virtually complete removal of phenol is realized when more than 0.2 ppm of chlorine dioxide is dosed for the 100ppb of initial phenol concentration.
